Richard Jacques composed the game's soundtracks, while an original album inspired by 1980s music was released by the game's audio director Steve Szczepkowski. While the game features a light-hearted tone, the underlying story focuses on the themes of trauma and grief. Narrative and teamwork were cited as the important pillars for the game's development. Marvel actively encouraged Eidos to create their own version of the Guardians, and collaborated closely with the team. Unlike Avengers, the game is strictly single-player with no downloadable content or microtransactions. Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy was the second game to be released under the multi-game partnership between Marvel Entertainment and Square Enix, with the first being Marvel's Avengers by Crystal Dynamics. The player assumes control of Peter Quill / Star-Lord, the team's self-proclaimed leader, and issues commands to other members of the Guardians including Drax the Destroyer, Gamora, Rocket Raccoon and Groot.

In the game, the titular team, while attempting to capture a beast for a wealthy collector, accidentally unleashes a seemingly harmless being, inadvertently setting in motion a series of catastrophic events that threaten the peace of the universe. Based on the Marvel Comics superhero team Guardians of the Galaxy, the game is set in an original universe. Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy is a 2021 action-adventure game developed by Eidos-Montréal and published by Square Enix.
